Landscapes

Whenever I visit a new place I always get inspired. I try to capture the place with sketches and photographs so I can paint when I get home to my studio.

I was completely blown away by Barcelona and long to go back.

I only spent one weekend in Seville, hence only one painting.

I am lucky enough to get to go to Venice every year, which is why there are so many paintings. It is hard not to be inspired by Venice. The light, the history, the architecture, the way of life and the people.

Luckily enough I married an American whose mother has a shack on Cape Cod. We go there every summer and have a wonderful time. The light has a magical quality and it is endlessly inspiring. Most of my paintings are of places within 200 yards of our front door.

I have painted many views of Brighton (only a few are on view here). For those who don't know Brighton it is very hilly and you can get wonderful vista looking over the town. I particularly like the rows of roof tops you can see from most high view points and then there are the Downs just beyond. Also there is wonderful Regency architecture and, of course, the bonkers Royal Pavillion (the building shaped like an onion as Terry Garoghan put it) to inspire. I once did a series of paintings of the Victorian cemetery, which were bought by Brighton and Hove's coroner.

I have done two paintings of Lewes's Bonfire night and donated them to the Cliffe Bonefire Society.

The latest place I have been is the Scottish highlands which I adored, despite the weather, and I am working on a series of paintings of Glen Coe and the surrounding area. I just can't wait to go back.
